From President Anne
Last week we had a productive meeting regarding the Dunns Road event and thank you Merv Williams for taking on the role of coordinating this very exciting proposal with the committee of Lara Barrett, Wayne Jenkins, Bill Cummins, Pat Morton and Susan Coyle.
Next we had our club assembly and went through the questions which I have to submit on behalf of the club.
We heard from Peter Wiltshire about the formation of an Interact club at Balcombe Grammar. His enthusiasm was evident and excellent to see the youth committee working on this.
Stephen Pugh has resigned from the role of Youth Director but thankfully is staying on the youth committee.
The board has approved Peter Wiltshire as our Interim Director and we wish him well.
The clubs new Youth Director updating us on Interact
Peter Rawlings gave an overview of what is happening in Community Service and Ray Martin on International.
Bill Cummins announced that we have four Saturday's locked in at Bunnings for the first half of 2024.
Gordon Morriss gave us great feedback on the membership survey, certainly some points to take on board including the overwhelming support to return the role of Sargent.
Rob Davies kept us informed about the container deposit scheme and the importance that we all get involved!
Monday is our meeting at Mornington Community Support Centre, we will have a number of guests so please engage with them and get to know them, invite someone to sit with you.
Please remember to BYO drinks and glasses on Monday evening.
Another big day on the 4th November at Bentons Square raising funds for the homeless.
Bentons Square BBQ and Collection next Saturday
Thank you to Mornington Gardens Holiday Village.
Thank you to Tom Goulding who introduced us to Rodger Smith, the owner of the Mornington Gardens Holiday Village, a family owned business since 1983.
Rodger has kindly allowed us to collect CDS approved recyclable containers each day, which Rob and Peter together with Lyn have commenced collecting this week and early each morning.
Our sincere appreciation to Rodger and his family for allowing us to collect their Containers for our Community.
An early and productive start for Rob and Peter
End Polio
We have two events coming up to support the End Polio campaign.
Firstly, a Peninsula Cluster Film Night on Friday 17 November, (see below).
Join in the Cluster Movie Night and help End Polio!
Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 40 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.
As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.
Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.
Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year!
Current Status: 9 cases reported this year.
6 Afghanistan
3 Pakistan
And secondly, please join us for lunch and a fun afternoon of Rotary fellowship as we launch the Rotary District 9810 & 9820 PolioPlus Society!
Special guest speaker Dr Murray Verso, Rotary International Zone 8 End Polio Now Coordinator, will give us an update on the fight to end polio and remind us why it is important to finish ending polio for good.
Please consider joining the PolioPlus Society and make a difference.
On Sunday 29 October, Peter Wiltshire and the Mount Martha Uniting Church held a Celebration of Community Service Organisations, with speakers Brian Smith from the Mount Martha CFA, Ben Smith from the Mornington Community Support Centre and Peter Rawlings representing the Rotary Club of Mount Martha.
We were also asked if we could help promote a White Ribbon Day event to be held on Saturday 25 November.
