Jo Lovelock 27.4.26
On Monday we had a compelling presentation from Jo Lovelock on her work in Timor Leste. Women in Timor Leste have 8 times the risk of dying from breast cancer.
Jo works with the Alola Foundation who believe that strong women mean a strong nation. Much of the work is on wound care with 80% of women with breast cancer presenting with wounds. While honey and egg whites have natural wound healing properties, they aren’t practical as people with access to them will choose to eat them, hence green tea is the chosen healing option.
The resources that we take for granted such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy are not available, surgery is the only option on offer. They make up wound kits with basics such as soap, hand washers, pads and Vaseline, and teach basics such as hand washing ( to the words of “happy birthday to you” the time taken to sing the song is a good start to ensuring hand hygiene). The best thing on offer for palliation is Panadol. The practical work is done to create the best possible outcome in a country with such limited resources.
It was a true message of service above self from an inspirational woman! We remembered the dedication that our own honorary member David Price had for the people of Timor Leste and his work with friends of Los Palos.

BGS Interact at MMV BBQ 2.5.26
On Saturday the Balcombe Grammar School Interact Club joined us for our Village BBQ raising $810 for the Animalia Foundation (wildlife rescue and rehabilitation shelter). The enthusiasm of these young people with the support of Rachel Gray and Peter Wiltshire is infectious.

Devil Bend Golf Club reaches 100k containers
On 21 November 2023, Roger Annear collected his first Containers 4 Community harvest from Devil Bend Golf Club where he is an avid golf player.
Kevin Stokes from the DBGC, diligently collects and sorts the containers a few times a week and Roger then counts them and brings them back to the central bins, something he and a number of others from our club have done 247 times since from DBGC.
What is remarkable is that this week those efforts from DBGC have seen us reach 100,195 containers which has produced donated income to the club of a staggering $13,325 - all of which is donated to Rotary Mount Martha and in turn contributed back into our local community and youth projects.
To the Devil Bend Golf Club to Kevin, Roger and the support crew, thank you and congratulations!
